Shane is inspired by creativity and innovation. Specifically, the study of how it works and can be modeled on a psychological level and its effective instigation in groups. He created his own undergraduate degree at the University of Washington (2006) in Creative Processes, which involved the study of how psychology and philosophy are used to understand and explain compositional techniques in digital art, music, and writing. He then received a Masters of Science in Creativity, Creative Problem

Solving, and Change Leadership from the International Center for Studies in Creativity at Buffalo State in New York (2008).

Upon moving to Portland Oregon Shane started two companies, The Art of Forward Motion and The ‘Vivid Engine’ Design Firm. The ‘Vivid Engine’ Design Firm is a graphic design company focused on the visual aesthetics of print and Internet data/art forms. This has informed his work with Forward Motion as a facilitator, trainer, and consultant focused on creativity, innovation, and problem solving. Shane believes that all things embody some element of design. Human conceptualizations, by their very nature, are designed. With this understanding comes the possibility to ‘design’ and implement a solution to any problem…given enough time, resources, and creative imagination.

Shane also believes that there must be a balance in life between the work aspects of creativity and innovation, and play. With that in mind he is currently the co-lead singer of a 60’s-70’s rock cover band in Portland called Rock Residue and he is planning his next solo album, which will be a shift from earlier creative works in style and tone. Perhaps something along the line of folk, jazz, rock, reggae, latin, acoustic metal pop? Time will tell.

Since his move to Portland in 2008 he has had excellent opportunities to volunteer for, and work with, many non-profit and government organizations. His recent clients have included Oregon’s Clackamas County Department of Human Services and the Washington State Auditors Office in collaboration with the Public Strategies Group, Oregon 150’s Project 2059 youth program, the management team of Lincoln County, Beaverton Mayor’s Office with North Star Facilitators, the Multnomah County Commission on Children, Families & Community, the Oregon Jumpstart Coalition board of directors, Financial Beginnings board of directors, and the Buffalo Arts Commission in New York State.

He is currently volunteering as a project manager with the American Marketing Association for Project Access Now, recently served as a committee chair for the 2009 Portland Creative Conference, and was a panel member for educational programs put on by the McMinnville Economic Development Partnership. He has also volunteered with the Clackamas County Community Congress, the Multnomah County Dialogue on Homelessness, the Regional Innovation Forum, Banking on Our Future with the American Marketing Association, the Creative Advocacy Network, and the newly formed Creative Economy Council of the Oregon Creative Industries.

Shane’s early career was in music, guitar teaching, and graphic design. He wrote and produced eight albums between 1998 and 2007, and has taught music to over 400 students since 1988. He won acknowledgement from King County in Washington State for poster design and has done design work for Portland Taiko, Innotech, the Creative Education Foundation, and the 2008 Creativity and Innovation Management International Conference.

Shane thinks helping others develop creative and innovative solutions to big challenges is probably one of the coolest and most fun things he could possibly spend his time doing.
